In September of 1969, Chicana/o students and faculty met for a
follow-up meeting to the historic Santa Barbara conference held in
April. Among the 25 resolutions developed by the group, was this:
Resolution 25: Chicanos and Penal Institutions
That the University of California recognize that Chicanos in penal
institutions are members of the Chicano community who cannot be ignored
by committing itself to assist and engage in educating the Chicano
convict as follows:
1. Funding University
Extension programs which could provide courses of study in, for
example, Chicano Studies that lead to admission to the University or the
the awarding of a University degree.
2. Making University employment available.
3. Providing books regarding Chicanos, their history and culture, to Chicano inmates.
4. Researching the problems of, and gaining experience in, the problems of Chicano inmates.
5. Providing fieldwork study opportunities to Chicanos in penal institutions.
6. Making available to Chicano inmates resources for legal aid on and off campus.
